The Bristol Drugs Project - Cabling
In 2008, The Bristol Drugs Project needed to expand into an extra building located down the street. This was a difficult project as it involved two listed Georgian buildings and required an architecturally sensitive approach.
The aim of the project was to install 48 Cat5e points into the new building. We also needed to ensure that the users were able to have the same system usage, at the same speed, as their colleagues in the main office.
A Fibre cable was run between the two buildings because the distance exceeded the 100m maximum length for Cat5e. Fibre modules connect to high speed switches which are then patched to the new points. In the new building, the points were distributed between an office in the basement and another on the first floor.
There was also a requirement for the new building users to have telephone handsets that were extensions of the main system. Their telephone system does not support the use of a fibre connection so a multi-way cable was run between the buildings. The ends were terminated ready for patching in each building.
Don Baker of the Bristol Drugs Project commented:
The work was taken on at short notice and in a very tight time frame. The environment was difficult and involved working around other contractors.
Orchard's staff performed to a very high standard, were very flexible and came up with innovative solutions to tricky problems. A faultless system was delivered on time, to specification and to budget. The whole project was a pleasure to be involved with.
